# Navigating Kato

Use the sidebar to choose where to work, the main area to review a list or conversation,
and a detail panel to inspect a specific item without losing your place.

**Before you begin:** sign in to Kato and open a workspace you belong to. This
walkthrough describes the web app. The Home screenshot shows the Kato workspace;
the Relio examples use Personal. Choose the workspace that contains your work.

<DocImage natural src="/images/navigation/home-sidebar.png" alt="Kato Home with Search, primary navigation, expanded Apps and Admin, Favorites, Objects, and Chats in the sidebar" caption="The sidebar stays beside your work. Home brings together Ask Kato, meetings, and tasks for the day." />

## Get to know the sidebar

| Area | What to do here |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Workspace name** | Check which team's workspace you are using, switch workspaces, or access its settings. |
| **Search** | Find an item without remembering which object or view contains it. |
| **Home** | Return to your workspace dashboard. |
| **Notifications** | Review updates that need your attention. |
| **Inbox** | Read email and work through conversations. |

| **Apps** | Open workspace apps such as Automations. Available apps depend on your workspace. |
| **Admin** | Access administrative areas such as Activity when available to your role. |
| **Favorites** | Return to items you have saved for quick access. |
| **Objects** | Browse collections such as Companies, People, or Projects. |

<Note>
  Object names are configurable. Your role, enabled apps, plan, and personal
  sidebar preferences can change what appears. A missing sidebar item does not
  necessarily mean its data was deleted.
</Note>

## Find a client or project

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check the workspace">
    Look at the workspace name in the top-left corner. If you belong to more
    than one workspace, select the name and choose the one that contains the work.

    <div className="kato-workspace-step-image">
      <DocImage natural src="/images/introduction/choose-workspace.png" alt="Workspace selector with a checkmark next to Verum and Personal and Free team also listed" caption="The checkmark shows the current workspace. Select Personal to follow the Relio examples shown here." />
    </div>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open Search">
    Select **Search** in the sidebar. Enter a distinctive part of the item name,
    such as **Relio**. Search can show both matching records and tasks.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the matching result">
    Check the item's name and type before opening it. If a client and a project
    have similar names, choose the record that matches the work you mean.
    In this example, **Relio** has a **Project** badge. The preview on the right
    shows its attributes before you open it. Use the arrow keys to navigate
    results, **Enter** to open one, and **Esc** to close Search.

    <DocImage natural src="/images/navigation/search-relio.png" alt="Search for Relio showing a Project result, related tasks, and a record preview with budget, description, status, and websites" caption="Check the result type and the preview to distinguish the project from its tasks." />
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the details">
    Read the record's attributes and related work. You have found the right item
    when its details match the client or project you intended to open.

    <DocImage natural src="/images/introduction/relio-record.png" alt="Relio project overview with attributes, a linked client, research notes, and a Tasks tab" caption="Use the record attributes and Overview activity to confirm the context, then open Tasks for the related work." />
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  If you prefer browsing, expand **Objects**, choose the appropriate object,
  and open a record from its list. A filtered view may show only part of that
  object's records. [Learn about views](/documentation/data/views).
</Tip>

## Move between an overview and an item

A list answers “What needs my attention?” A detail panel answers “What does this
specific item require?” Opening a task's details lets you inspect its properties
and description while keeping the surrounding work in view.

Try the same pattern with a task:

1. Select **Tasks** in the sidebar.
2. Open a task you recognize.
3. Review its description, assignees, status, and due date.
4. Open its linked record, if one is present, to understand the client or project.
5. Return to the task list to choose the next item.

<DocImage natural src="/images/introduction/saved-task.png" alt="Task board with Send the revised homepage brief open in a detail panel and its full description beside it" caption="The task board remains visible while you review the selected task and its linked Relio project." />

**Expected result:** you can trace an action back to its context. If the task has
no linked record, its surrounding project information may need to be added.
See [Organize tasks](/documentation/organize-tasks) for a complete walkthrough.

## Ask a question without leaving your work

Select **Ask Kato** in the page header where it is available. The assistant opens
alongside your work. Name or mention the item you want to discuss, then ask a
focused question such as **“What tasks are still open for Relio?”**

<DocImage natural src="/images/navigation/ask-kato-tasks.png" alt="Relio project open beside an Ask Kato response containing six open task cards with priorities and assignees" caption="Ask Kato shows the project's open tasks alongside the record. Task cards keep the action, owner, and priority together." />

Select a task card to inspect its details in the side panel. In this example,
**Define the homepage message for CRE teams** opens with its status, assignee,
priority, and description. Use the back control beside the conversation title
to return to the answer.

<DocImage natural src="/images/navigation/ask-kato-task-detail.png" alt="Define the homepage message for CRE teams open in the assistant side panel, with the Relio project still visible" caption="Open a task from the answer to review the actual task details without losing the project context." />

[Use Ask Kato](/documentation/use-ask-kato) explains mentions, conversation
controls, example requests, and how to check the response.

## Adjust your sidebar

Right-click a navigation item such as **Home** and select **Customize sidebar**.
The same menu includes **Hide from sidebar** for that item and **Sidebar settings**
for additional preferences.

<div className="kato-workspace-step-image">
  <DocImage natural src="/images/navigation/sidebar-menu.png" alt="Sidebar context menu showing Hide from sidebar, Customize sidebar, and Sidebar settings" caption="Right-click a navigation item to open its sidebar controls." />
</div>

In customization mode, drag the handles to reorder items and use the switches
to show or hide navigation items and sections. Select **Save** when you finish.

<div className="kato-sidebar-customization-image">
  <DocImage natural src="/images/navigation/customize-sidebar.png" alt="Sidebar customization mode with drag handles, visibility switches for navigation items and sections, and a Save button" caption="Keep frequently used items visible and arrange them in the order you use them." />
</div>

These preferences help you organize your own navigation; they do not rearrange
a teammate's sidebar.

## Can't find something?

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I can see the item in another workspace, but not here.">
    Workspaces have separate data and membership. Switch to the workspace that
    owns the item instead of creating a duplicate in the current one.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The record exists, but it is missing from a view.">
    Review the view's filters. Open the object or use Search to find the record,
    then check which attribute keeps it out of the filtered view.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A teammate has an app or object I cannot see.">
    Check your sidebar preferences first. If the item is still unavailable, ask
    your workspace administrator about your role and the workspace's enabled apps.
  </Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>
